Barrington Street Heritage District
The Barrington Street Historic District was created to protect all heritage properties in the Barrington Street area. The District extends from Duke to Bishop Street and includes all buildings and public spaces fronting on Barrington. The area’s 26 registered heritage properties and 15 old commercial buildings span a period of more than 250 years creating a heritage ambience that is unique to this district. Civic buildings, churches, and open spaces frame the district on the north and south, and hearken back to the earliest days of Barrington Street’s evolution as the city’s main street.

The DHBC gives its membership a collective voice at the table on all major issues concerning Downtown Halifax, including Downtown development, heritage preservation, in the Mayors office, in the Premier’s office, the media and with other stakeholders like the Greater Halifax Partnership and the Chamber of Commerce. The collective voice of 1,800 businesses, focused on Downtown, focused on you.
The DHBC runs many programs, events, and marketing initiatives to make Downtown Halifax a better place to live, work and play.
Spring Garden in downtown Halifax
Spring Garden Area is the heart of the Halifax Capital District. Consisting of nine city blocks the area has over 200 retail shops and services, most independently owned, and supported by convenient parking nearby. This charming, vibrant area is a shoppers’ paradise where brand name fashions, Nova Scotian giftware, spas and salons rub shoulders with excellent hotels, restaurants, cafes and pubs. The area is fast becoming home to a growing number of downtown urban dwellers in desirable, upscale residential developments.
Steeped in history and culture Spring Garden is surrounded by tourist attractions and landmarks such as the Victorian Halifax Public Gardens, the Museum of Natural History, Cambridge Library at Royal Artillery Park and the famous Halifax Citadel to name a few, all adding to a unique experience in living, shopping, working and playing.
Halifax Public Gardens
Begun in 1836 this lavish formal Victorian Garden is considered to be the finest in North America. It sprawls over 17 acres and is open from May until November. Inside the surrounding wrought iron fence is a tranquil world of beauty and shady retreats with ponds, fountains and a wide array of flowers. This site is a favourite of couples and is the home of one of the most photographed structures in Atlantic Canada, the bandstand.
